I know what you’re thinking…Free cell phone service? No way, right? WRONG! I happened to stumble across a very unique cellular network provider called FreedomPop. FreedomPop is just one of many Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO’s) such as Metro PCS, Boost Mobile, and Cricket Wireless…All of which lease wireless telephone and data service from major carriers such as Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T.
FreedomPop offers several plans…one of which is 100% free. The free plan will give you 200 minutes of talk time, 500 text messages and 200 MB of data each month. Obviously, this plan will not fit everyone’s needs but for people who don’t require a lot of talk and data, this plan is great. You can even keep your current phone number. Just slide the FreedomPop SIM into your phone and that’s it!
I personally chose one of the paid plans which include unlimited talk, unlimited text and 1 GB of data for only $79.99 a year. That breaks down to just $6.67 a month! Annual billing means only having to pay just one bill a year. I challenge anyone to find a better deal. As of this date, it can’t be done!
I moved to FreedomPop because I was tired of paying $90 a month to Sprint. Since the phones were so expensive, I opted for a 2-year lease on an $800 phone only to find out that upon completion of my lease that I still didn’t own the phone. I was forced to pay “fair market value” in order to keep it or else hand it back to Sprint and walk away with nothing. That just didn’t make any sense to me.
